Silver Tips - 16 Years Old Today!

We served our first Afternoon Tea exactly 16 years ago today on November 6, 1999.  My sister and I handled the kitchen that day. My good friend, Mike Olsen, came to lend a hand making Tea and we had 90 customers that first day.  Our employees were brand new, we had 19 seats, we barely kept it together and we were exhilarated.  Here's some of what I've learned from the last 16 years:

  • It's like throwing a party everyday - it's not for everyone.
  • The customer is the boss.  Make them happy.
  • Everyone today is more harried, less attentive and more impatient.
  • Stick to your knitting - do what you know best. Do not get off-focused.
  • Be actively calm - things go wrong, just deal with it.
  • Hire well and set the tone early so there is a consistency of culture.
  • Be compassionate - we're all getting there.
  • The word is out - Tea is not chamomile or for when you're ill.
  • The industry is a good one to be in and still growing.
  • Running a business has become much harder in the last 5 years.
  • Anonymous reviews should be made illegal.  Tell us - we'd love to fix it!
  • Take time to have a cup of tea.  It fixes just about everything.
