Herbal Blends vs. Tea

It's still surprising to us that customers think herbal blends are TEA. They're not. We use them like tea, we steep them like tea, we enjoy them like tea but there's no real TEA in them. What is tea? Anything from the tea bush Camellia Sinensis and nothing else. So everything that is traditionally Black, Green, Oolong or White tea falls in this category. Decaf tea also falls into this category. What is not in this category? Anything like chamomile, peppermint, lemongrass, hibiscus, rooibos, spearmint, ginger root, cinnamon....etc. I'm sure you get the difference now. Do herbal blends have the benefits of tea? No, they do not. They do have benefits, though, but not those that are generally associated with tea. They may be good for digestion or soothing or good before bedtime....but they are not the ones associated with high antioxidants, catechins or polyphenols known to be in real tea. Here's one of our house herbal blends - Mystic Mint. Rather than just having peppermint, try this one which also has spearmint, tulsi, rosehips, lemon myrtle and linden flowers. Alternatively, if you are a staunch herbal blend fan, try a real tea the next time and see if you can find one you like. If caffeine content bothers you, try a Green or Oolong or steep the tea twice and drink the 2nd infusion rather than the first and you will be sipping much less caffeine.
