Gluten-Free at Silver Tips

downloadTea sandwiches are an integral part of who we are.  After all, we are a Tea Room serving "Afternoon Tea" all day.  Converting our Menu to Gluten-free was a challenge.  We decided, instead, to add one substantive Gluten-free option just as did in our Dessert section where we offer Gluten-free Brownies & Cookies.   We've experimented with various types of breads, tortillas and crackers.  Most were unsuitable for being the wrong size, having a very short shelf-life or just difficult to present.   A recent Mintel International research survey indicated the following:
  • 1 in 4 respondents ages 18 to 24 eat gluten-free foods.
  • 27% of respondents eat gluten-free foods to help them in their weight-loss efforts.
  • The market for gluten-free foods grew 44% from 2011 to 2013.
This validated what we already knew from the anecdotal information we had from our own Comment Cards and customer feedback.  We intensified our efforts this summer and finally found a winner.  Next week, we will officially include a Gluten-free sandwich option in our Menu.  It will be a roll, served open-faced and you can choose all our sandwiches as a gluten-free option - our Egg Sandwich marinated in smokey Lapsang Souchong tea, our signature Tarry Chicken Sandwich, the Mediterranean with an Olive Tapenade, our Tuna Provencal, Balzac or even the Smoked Salmon.  The option is already being offered at the Tea Room - just ask for it.
