We have great people.  I hire for attitude and who they are.  I tell them we can teach them all about Tea but I can't teach them how to be nice.  That they must bring to the party.  I look for a well-adjusted person, someone who is open, a little bit genteel, no rough edges, someone who is naturally kind, optimistic and is not defined by their work but who they are.  Because it is a workplace, I also want someone who does not thrive on drama. Responsibility, punctuality, hard work - these we consider the basic price of entry. Silver Tips is 15 years old

CIMG1263-001Silver Tips opened on November 6th, 1999.  We had 19 seats and had had been granted our Certificate of Occupancy the previous afternoon.  We were in over our heads, had little experience in running a restaurant and our employees had only the very basics of Tea training. I discovered, to my deep dismay, that our Food Prep person was a 7th Day Adventist and needed Saturdays off.  That first day, my sister and I were Food Prep and Cook!  We served 96 people, were full all day and elated but completely exhausted when the day was over.  We toasted sandwiches, heated Scones, sent out Afternoon Tea tiers and tried to avert disasters.   In the front of the house, my very good friend, Mike Olsen, who had...

One step forward, two steps back

We're adding new touches to the Tea Room - paint on the wall, new storage stands in our restrooms, pretty Kleenex holders, some hand cream...you get the picture.  Not two days went by and the Hand Cream pump has already been broken!  Ah well.  We tried.  So we will have to go back to being  utilitarian and functional.

New Year reflections

I hope this new year brings joy and good health to all.  Last year was our first full year after our expansion and we pored over our numbers to see what we could learn:
  • We serve an increased number of customers
  • Spending per person declined
  • Sales of Food & Tea consumed at the Tea Room increased
  • Sales of Loose Leaf Tea and tea Accessories declined
  •  We increased our new customer base
  • Our larger space allowed us to rent out part of the Tea Room for smaller parties
  • The banquette is a big hit
  • Our loyalty card was used frequently and was redeemed for the most free points of any year to date
  • Our online sales were the best in 3 years
  • We received high praise for our food and tea
  • Customers raved...

Appreciation of our new space..

A good friend of mine has a cabinetry and woodworking business - all things wood, carpentry, home design, interior build-outs, custom benches, shelves, countertops, small and big.  His work is clean, professional and of singular quality.  The other day he stopped by our Tea Room and sent me a very gracious e-mail:
The tea room expansion looks great!  The open, bright atmosphere with cheerful colored walls make for a friendly environment for your customers.  The simple straight lines throughout the store, and of the display shelves show your wares well.  It was a pleasure to stop in the other day to see the new improved shop.
