The 2017 Makaibari season:
The season has just begun and we are actively sourcing new teas.
Fire at the Makaibari Bungalow, March 16, 2017:
On March 16th, 2017, the Makaibari Heritage Bungalow was destroyed in a fire. This was the home of the Banerjees, the 4th generation owners of the 150-year-old Darjeeling Tea Estate. Fortunately, no one was hurt but everything they owned in the blaze, including priceless mementos from over 80 different nations were burned to the ground.
Owner Rajah Banerjee is renowned in the Tea industry for his hospitality and warmth. His home was always open to travelers and well-wishers, and he would often give tours of Makaibari to anyone who stopped by. Rajah is very aware that had the fire occurred a mere 12 hours earlier at night, they might not have been as lucky.
We've established a GoFundMe page in order to help rebuild. And you can help. In a spirit of gratitude and revival, Rajah has stated that contributions to this fund will be used for the upliftment of the Makaibari community. Happy to report we now have 2016 First Flush, 2nd Flush, Long Leaf Green, Autumnals & Silver Tips in house. Try them all! It was a great harvest this year. Makaibari is now closed for the winter when there is no tea production. We will let you know when the 2017 begins. Darjeeling is still waiting for Spring rains to provide the impetus to the First Flush of the new season.
As usual, we have put the previous season's teas on sale. Pick them up at a hefty discount.
