A devastating cyclone (hurricane) hit Makaibari and surrounding areas in Darjeeling on May 25, 2009. It damaged over 150 workers' houses, the factory roof and even the Manager's complex. The Town Supervisor issued a plea for relief and help to the NGO's in the area and declared it a catastrophic occurrence. JEEVIKA, the organization that receives and monitors disbursement of Fair Trade funds has agreed to accept all Cyclone Relief contributions and will channel to Makaibari for damage repair. For all those who continue to enjoy Makaibari's teas, we've set up 3 levels of contributions below - $5, $10 or $20 or multiples of any. 100% of all proceeds will be used only towards cyclone damage repair.
