What is Earl Grey?

[caption id="attachment_4538" align="alignleft" width="300"]Grand Earl Grey Grand Earl Grey[/caption] We've been surprised twice this past week by customers thinking that Earl Grey was just a Breakfast or "regular" tea.  By "regular", they meant a straight black tea similar to a Liptons or Twinings at the supermarket.  When we pointed out that it has a flavoring added to it, they were surprised.  So here's a tutorial on Earl Grey: If a tea is labelled Earl Grey, it will have Bergamot flavoring added to it.  And yes, it's "bergamot" without an 'n' in it! Tough job but someone has to do it

We're smack dab in the middle of sampling all the goodies we sourced from the Fancy Food Show this summer.  We sample against several key objectives:
  • Focus on sweet rather than savory
  • Keep the packages small
  • Definitely include chocolate
  • A cookie-type product should be part of the mix
We've learned over the years that our customers strongly favor sweet gourmet treats rather than savory, at least at our Tea Room.  No matter the high quality of some of the scrumptious non-sweet items we've found over the years, they do not appeal to our customer base the way our specially-selected sweet products do.  Here's a sampling of what we've reviewed so far and we can see it's going to be tough to choose this year.  Stay tuned.  New items will start showing up at the Tea Room in October. Tea - it's not just for drinking any more.  You can even cook with it.  In fact our wholesale company, Eco-Prima Tea, provides teas to several restaurants around the country for recipes in their menus.  Lapsang Souchong is a favorite for its smoky note as are Oolong and Ceylon.  One restaurant buys two grades of Ceylon from us and has us label one as "Cooking Ceylon".  We thought you could have some fun using Tea in different ways so we've put together a Recipe Book and given you some guidance on what teas go best with these recipes.  Be creative, experiment and come up with your own.  Our Pinterest page has a whole Board that we've called 'Drink your tea & eat it too' and you can get ideas here as well.  Meanwhile, enjoy our recipe book and share your recipes and tips with us....
