Reducing Caffeine - Rooibos

Jun 03, 2010 |  Written by Anupa Mueller

Last month, one of our dedicated customers wrote me a note asking my advice on non-caffeinated teas.  Turns out, she had been told to eliminate caffeine and she described herself as a "die-hard tea fanatic - strong blacks with lots of milk".  Her preferred teas were Yunnan Gold, Assams and our recent Panda Blend.  Having never strayed into the world of non-caffeinated teas, she needed suggestions.  She knew a bit about herbals but not about Rooibos.  I love letters like this and could understand her predicament.  Going from strong Yunnans and Assams to non-caffeinated can be a shock! My suggestions were as follows:
  • ROOIBOS AFRIKANA (My #1 choice - strong, lovely, takes milk, hint of citrus/vanilla)
  • JOHANNESBURG - Rooibos with Caramel and Chocolate
  • SERENGETI - Green Rooibos, Honeybush, Pomegranate
  • CRUSH ON YOU - Rooibos with Passionfruit & Grapefruit
  • GRAND TISANE - Combination of Rooibos, Cinnamon, Plum, Hibiscus and Almonds
A few days later, she ordered the Rooibos Afrikana along with some other teas and here's the note I received 2 days ago:
Just a note that I am LOVING the Rooibos Afrikana!!  It's wonderful, wished I ordered a bigger bag.  And I got the Earl Grey Rooibos too, love that as well.  Thank you so much for your recommendations, my first try into the world of rooibos has been very successful.

AND don’t forget the health benefits of Rooibos! I have read that it has more antioxidants than green tea.
For years I gave up caffeine and only drank Lipton decaf (What was I thinking!!). Then I discovered the wonderful world of loose teas from Silvertips, and I love a good strong cup like your other customer mentioned. Now I try to compromise. Caffeine in the morning, and a naturally decaf like rooibos in the afternoon. I also re steep the morning teas, so they loose their caffeine .
Do you still have Crush on You or was that one that was discontinued? You sent me a sample of it with an order I placed and I loved it.
Hope to see you soon! My friend Hisako will be at the tearoom for lunch today with her son who just came home from college. She discovered that he loves tea, and she is hoping that the tearoom will be a nice place for them to bond when he is home!

Absolutely – the health benefits of Rooibos are many. And Diane, we definitely have Crush on You – we love it iced and hot. Let me know how your friend enjoyed her visit today. I was there but I don’t recall seeing them – I may have left before they arrived.
