10 Tips on Resilience

I was asked recently what qualities I considered critical in running your own business.  I replied Resilience, Managerial acumen, & Stamina.  You have to be able to continually bounce back, you need to know about managing processes and people as well as basic finance and, of course, have the energy to keep going. A recent body of research done by Dr. Dennis Charney, Dean, Icahn School of Medicine and Dr. Steven Southwick, Yale School of Medicine indicated that resilience can be taught  - here are their 10 tips:

  1. Develop a core set of beliefs that nothing can shake.
  2. Try to find meaning in whatever stressful or traumatic thing has happened.
  3. Try to maintain a positive outlook.
  4. Take cues from someone who is especially resilient.

If it's Tuesday, it must be Sam's Club

If the weather is decent, Tuesday mornings I go to Sam's Club to get our weekly supplies and then deliver them to the Tea Room.  It gives me a chance to get to talk to my staff and get some business done in person before they open.  Sam's Club can be an adventure on any day but I try to avoid the shenanigans by going early during 'Business Club' hours when there are mostly businesses...

Here's what excites her about her job at Silver Tips: Natalie loves trying all the different teas and teaching people something about Tea that they did not know. By the way, it was Natalie's idea to offer Pumpkin Chai at...

Our Staff - Annalisa

We have great people.  I hire for attitude and who they are.  I tell them we can teach them all about Tea but I can't teach them how to be nice.  That they must bring to the party.  I look for a well-adjusted person, someone who is open, a little bit genteel, no rough edges, someone who is naturally kind, optimistic and is not defined by their work but who they are.  Because it is a workplace, I also want someone who does not thrive on drama. Responsibility, punctuality, hard work - these we consider the basic price of entry. We've got a great crew at Silver Tips and I thought you would enjoy knowing them better.  We'll feature several of our staff, off and on, no special order, starting with one of our Managers, Annalisa:
